Levofloxacin hemihydrate
Indications/Uses
Acute maxillary sinusitis; acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic community-acquired pneumonia; complicated skin & skin structure infections; complicated UTI including acute pyelonephritis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Caplet 250-750 mg. IV 250-500 mg by slow IV infusion. Doses to be taken once daily for 7-14 days.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin, quinolone antimicrobial agents. Epilepsy; history of tendon disorder related to fluoroquinolone administration. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & adolescent <18 yr.
Special Precautions
Known or suspected CNS disorder (severe cerebral arteriosclerosis); certain drug therapy that may predispose seizures or lower seizure threshold. Prolonged use; osteochondrosis; pseudomembranous & antibiotic-associated colitis. Maintain adequate hydration. Avoid excessive sunlight exposure. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Impaired renal function (CrCl <80 mL/min).
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, nausea, headache, constipation, insomnia, dizziness, vomiting, abdominal pain, dyspepsia, rash, vaginitis, flatulence, pruritus, pain, chest & back pain.
Drug Interactions
Decreased absorption w/ Al- or Mg-containing drugs. Increased risk of CNS stimulation & convulsive seizures w/ NSAIDs. Disturbances of blood glucose, including hyperglycemia & hypoglycemia w/ antidiabetic agents.
